Southampton Township
Southampton Township was formed in 1799 and is nestled in the southern part of Bedford County with the Mason-Dixon Line forming its southern boundary. Tussey Mountain rises and divides this second largest township in Bedford County.
The Hewitt Covered Bridge, a 88-foot long Burr Truss bridge is located in Hewitt. It crosses over Town Creek and is one of 15 historic covered bridges in Bedford County. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
Southampton was a hustling township in earlier days. It was home to several post offices in Elbinsville, Chaneysville, Beans Cove and Hewitt. Today the mail mostly arrives from the Clearville Post Office although a few residents receive their mail from Everett and Artemas.
Eleven one-room schoolhouses and one two-room schoolhouse once stood in the township, some are still standing today. Several churches are also located here but only a few still have regular services.
